This section begins with Iqbal and Juggut getting arrested early in the morning. Iqbal was convicted of a murder and while Jugga went out of the village, being accused of being a robber. Both Iqbal and Jugga show very little respect to the police. Iqbal being the superior one than Jugga, protests violently against the police and they allow him off easy. However, Iqbal continues to protest and so the police handcuff him and drag him to his respective cell. Later, a group of men are sent to arrest Jugga. This is done when Jugga is asleep and is handcuffed. When Jugga awakes, he calmly explains that he had nothing to do with the dacoity and defends himself. The head constable ponders whether or not he is innocent. Jugga's mom then provides evidence of Jugga's bangles and holds onto it for further proof. Soon after, Jugga meets up with Iqbal and the two of them talk in their prison cells and complains that they are in prison for no reason and discuss the immoral treatment based on their social class. At this point, readers are easily able to distinguish the importance of the caste system in india.

The next chapter opens up to the sentence, "Early in September the time schedule in Mano Majra started going wrong." The train schedule in Mano Majra starts to become irregular and the daily lifestyle that the village was so used to living becomes unpredictable and spontaneous. This changes everyone’s' lives significantly. As a result, a group of soldiers set up tents near the train station so that they can stop all trains coming from Delhi. However, one morning, a mysterious train from Pakistan arrives at the station and is a very eerie sign. This foreshadows the likely bloodshed events to come that will take place. In the train were dead bodies with no signs of life. Because of this, a village meeting is held but only the high officials speak at this meeting. Chand is very mortified of the bodies, as are everyone else. They are scarred by the image of the corpses. This chapter brings up a lot of questions about death and the inevitability of death. The section ends when Chand is still obviously mortified with horror and starts drinking excessively with a young prostitute.
