In the book, Train to Pakistan, the story is set in a time period civil instability in India. During this time, which was after the British left in 1947, the nation split into the Muslim partition and Hindu Partition. The story is set in a fictional town of Mano Majra, a village at the border of Pakistan and India. The story documents the religious movements that happens over the course of time.
This time period can be connected to several things that have happened in the past and that are happening in the meantime. For example, one of the biggest religious conflicts put the whole continent of Europe into war.
The Thirty Year War was a religious feud mainly fought by the Roman Catholics and the Protestants in present-day Rome, which later spread into Germany then to other nations. This war was known to be one of most destructive conflicts in European history. Other past civil wars over religion include the Rwanda Genocide, Bosnia-Herzegovina War, Sudan Civil War, and the Second Congo War.

With these past incidents, the existence of religious civil wars are still evident even in current times. For example, one of the most recent incidents that happened only 2 years ago was the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict. The two countries went to war for more territory. Like the Indian Civil War, both groups raped, murdered, robbed, and did other "necessary" actions in order to interrogate people of opposite groups.
Not only is the Israel-Palestinian Conflict the one of the current major religion-based civil war but there are many other current ones like the war in Afghanistan (led by Muslim terrorist who are in war with anybody that is non-Muslim, particularly the U.S), the war in Thailand (feud between the Thai Buddhists and Muslims), the war that was in Iraq (war that was fought between the Sunni-Muslims and the Shiite-Muslims) and many others that are even happening to this very moment.
